The Saratoga Police Department is planning to construct a new kennel to house stray dogs.

During the August 19th Saratoga Town Council meeting, Police Chief John Moore announced that he submitted a special use permit to the Planning Commission for a new set of kennels. Chief Moore said he hopes to build the shelter near the existing dog park at the corner of West Walnut Avenue and South 5th Street. The Chief said the location keeps the animals away from residential areas and provides caretakers with easy access to the park.

Chief Moore said the town’s existing dog kennel is old and requires extensive maintenance. The new facility will feature eight separate cages with a center work area. Should the Planning Commission approve the special use permit, Chief Moore said he will work with Must Love Dogs Sanctuary, a local nonprofit animal rescue, to help raise funds for the new kennels.

The Town Council expressed their support for the project, but informed Chief Moore that an official vote must wait until after the Planning Commission reviews the proposal. The Commission is scheduled to consider the special use permit application during its September 9th meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Saratoga Town Hall.
