The Saratoga Police Department is requesting authorization to purchase two new patrol vehicles.
Last August, the Saratoga Police Department bought a pre-owned 2020 All-Wheel-Drive Special Service Dodge Durango. The SUV was purchased from an Illinois dealership specializing in second-hand government vehicles.
During the June 18th Saratoga town council meeting, Police Chief Mike Morris said he needs more patrol vehicles. Chief Morris said he found a comparable dealership selling two used Chevy Tahoe patrol SUVs.
Chief Morris said the two Chevy Tahoes come equipped with most of the equipment he needs. The police chief said the two four-year-old vehicles have 37,000 and 29,000 miles on their odometers, respectively.
Chief Morris asked the council to allow him to open negotiations with the dealership to purchase the two patrol vehicles. The chief said the price is listed at $82,500 for both Chevy’s. Chief Morris said he already has the money set aside in the upcoming fiscal year budget.
Councilman Bub Barkhurst asked Chief Morris how much more money it will cost to outfit the two SUVs with any needed equipment. The police chief said the listed price covers everything except for gun racks and spotlights. Chief Morris said he already has all the additional equipment on hand.
Chief Morris said both vehicles have a little time left on their 5-year 50,000-mile factory warranties.
During a previous town council meeting, Chief Morris informed the governing body that several of his current patrol vehicles needed service, including an existing Chevy Tahoe.
At the June 18th meeting, Mayor Chuck Davis asked if the Tahoe had more problems than the other vehicles. Chief Morris said the Chevy needed engine repairs, but the work was done under warranty.
Councilman Barkhurst asked Chief Morris if he personally preferred the Dodge Durango over the Chevy Tahoe. The police chief said he likes the bigger Durango, but other officers prefer the Tahoe.
Councilman Jerry Fluty asked the chief if he believes the Chevy Tahoe is less reliable than the Dodge Durango. Chief Morris said the two vehicles have required a similar amount of repairs.
Chief Morris said he has been searching for a long time to find the right type of vehicle for his department. The police chief said the two 2020 Chevy Tahoes have the optional equipment he requires.
The Saratoga town council voted to allow Chief Morris to enter into negotiations for the two patrol vehicles.
Speaking to Bigfoot99 Tuesday afternoon, the police chief said he is still gathering more information for the council. Chief Morris said he will present his findings to the governing body during the July 2nd Saratoga town council meeting.
