Saratoga’s town clerk will step down from the job next month.
Marie Christen has served as the clerk for the town of Saratoga since being selected by then mayor Creed James through an application process in March of 2021. Christen, who also owns Sweet Marie’s Mercantile in the downtown area, was reappointed to the position of town clerk by Mayor Chuck Davis after he took office earlier this year.
Near the end of Tuesday’s Saratoga town council meeting, Christen read her letter of resignation. In her letter, Christen emotionally said her last day would be July 14th.
Christen offered to stay on, part-time, to train her successor. She thanked the council for the opportunity to serve the town.
Sounding as if he was fighting back tears, Councilman Mike Cooley thanked Christen. Councilman Cooley said Christen’s hard work often went unnoticed by the residents of the town.
Mayor Davis also thanked Christen for her hard work. The mayor said Christen always strove to do what was best for the town.
Christen won’t entirely cease working for the town of Saratoga. Mayor Davis recommended retaining Christen for court related administrative duties.
Mayor Davis said the clerk of court position requires less than 20 hours a month. The mayor said Christen worked well with municipal court judge Honorable Daniel Massey and attorney Patrick Brady to clean up the town’s backlog of court cases.
Mayor Davis asked for a vote to maintain Christen as the clerk of court. The council unanimously agreed.
Christen explained to Bigfoot99 that she is stepping down as clerk to pursue an employment opportunity that allows her to work from home.
An official announcement for the open position of Town Clerk was not posted to the Saratoga web page as of Wednesday.
