Carbon County Search and Rescue assisted a group of stranded elk hunters last week.

On Friday, October 17th, Sheriff Alex Bakken issued a social media post stating that the previous day, October 16th, Carbon County Search and Rescue volunteers responded to a distress call from several elk hunters stranded in the Wild Horse area of southwest Carbon County.

The hunters’ vehicle appears to have gotten stuck in the mud. Stranded and unprepared for the worsening weather, Sheriff Bakken wrote that the hunters activated the SOS feature on their GPS device. Carbon County Search and Rescue West volunteers located the parties and safely removed them from the area.

Thursday’s incident marks the beginning of the fall and winter search and rescue cycle, which Sheriff Bakken wrote typically begins around the start of elk hunting season.

The Sheriff reminds hunters and other back country sportsmen that the weather can change rapidly this time of year. Even a light snowfall can turn a two-track road into impassable mud.
