U.S. Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, in a letter to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm—the former Democratic Governor of Michigan, blasted the Biden Administration for its continued draining of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
The letter is also signed by U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris Rogers of Washington, the Republican Chair of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. In the letter, Senator Barrasso and Representative Rogers call on the Energy Secretary to safeguard the SPR and stop using releases to prevent further increases in the price of gasoline—a ploy the pair say Biden is doing to provide “political cover” by keeping the price at the pump artificially low.
The pair say the White House has overseen the largest depletion of oil in the country’s reserves since 1983. They write, “When President Biden took office in January of 2021, the SPR contained 638 million barrels of oil. Today, the SPR contains 367 barrels of oil, which represents a nearly 42 percent decline from when President Biden took office.”
The pair charge Biden is abusing the country’s stockpile of oil to artificially deflate oil prices to hide “record inflation that are a consequence of the administration’s radical rush to “green” energy policies.”
The letter urges the Biden Administration “to put this country’s energy security first” and to stop using the Strategic Petroleum Reserve for “political purposes.”
Barrasso and Rogers state in their letter dated May 29, 2024, “The record high inflation every American is paying, in all sectors of the economy, is a consequence of the administration’s radical push for “green” energy.”
They urge the administration to end the “war on oil and natural gas and focus on lowering production costs.”
