In Rawlins, the dog park and skate park continue to be popular new attractions in the city for both residents and visitors.

During last night city council work session, Parks and Recreation Director Jason Seehon said that both facilities at Colorado and Daley Street are proving to be big draws. Seehon said the dog park provides a great view of the skate park which allows him to keep tabs on how it’s being used.

Seehon said one of his dogs has already picked out its favorite fire hydrant, which are some of the fun features recently installed at the playground for pups. He noted the dog park isn’t just for your four-legged friends.

City crews recently landscaped the entrance and made other improvements like a doggie drinking fountain. Seehon said the dog park is functioning to draw visitors off the interstate and into the city for extended stops.

The dog park has even won over people who were nay-sayers at first. Mayor Terry Weickum has admitted that he was among those who dismissed the idea of the dog park at first. He has changed his mind. The mayor told a story last night about another resident who has been won over by the success of the park.

Councilman Chris Weisenburg added the dog park combined with the removal of sage brush has beautified the section of town around the cemetery and Key Club Park.

Seehon said his department is sitting on $35,000 in additional funding for improvements at the skate park. The next project his department is working on is an ice skating rink that may be ready this winter.
