Strong winds are wreaking havoc on semi‑truck traffic along Interstate 80.
This week’s windstorms have closed much of Interstate 80 to high‑profile vehicles. Cooper Cove Road exit at mile marker 279 has been identified as the most hazardous stretch of road. Yesterday afternoon, the Wyoming Department of Transportation reported average wind speeds above 44 miles per hour in the area, with a peak gust of 75.2 miles an hour.
Speaking to Bigfoot99, Wyoming Highway Patrol Senior Public Relations Specialist Aaron Brown said since Tuesday, 16 semi‑trucks have been blown over by high winds on Interstate 80 between Laramie and Rawlins. Brown said no serious injuries have been reported so far. The commercial drivers whose rigs were blown over are being cited for willfully disregarding road closure signs.
Brown encouraged non‑commercial drivers to use caution while traveling on I‑80, reduce their speed, and pull over for stopped emergency vehicles. Brown added that even if the winds seem calm at the moment, a sudden gust could blow your vehicle out of the lane and into an emergency responder.
