The Carbon County Treasurer’s Office will no longer sell off-road vehicle and snowmobile permit stickers.
Every year, outdoor enthusiasts must purchase a permit sticker from the Wyoming State Trails Program for their off-road vehicles and snowmobiles. Sticker sales help fund the maintenance and development of the state’s trail systems. The decals cost $15 for residents and $35 for non-residents.
Traditionally, the trail stickers could be purchased from local vendors, such as the Carbon County Treasurers Office in Rawlins. During Tuesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, Treasurer Lindsey West said beginning on January 1st, all Wyoming State Trails Program stickers must be purchased through the organization’s website. Local vendors will simply act as pick up locations for the permits.
Treasurer West said the Wyoming State Trails Program website can be difficult to navigate, requiring the creation of an account before a sticker can be purchased.
Because the state is removing vendors’ ability to physically distribute ORV and snowmobile stickers, West said her office will stop participating in the program. Permit stickers purchased online can be delivered directly to customers’ homes or picked up at a location outside of Rawlins.
Treasurer West said the county barely broke even on the physical sale of the off-road vehicle and snowmobile permit stickers. For the sake of her staff, West said she is no longer partnering with the Wyoming State Trails Program.
Treasurer West said her office receives $1 for every physical sticker sold. Commission Chairwoman Sue Jones agreed with West’s decision and said she is willing to reconsider selling the ORV and snowmobile stickers if the Wyoming State Trails Program offers to share more of its profits with the county.
The board of county commissioners expressed their support for Treasurer West’s decision to end the partnership with the Wyoming State Trails Program.
The Carbon County Treasurer’s Office was the only sticker vendor in Rawlins. However, seven other vendor locations remain in the county. Snowmobile and ORV permit stickers purchased online can be picked up at the following locations: the Cowboy Inn in Baggs, the Olde Trading Post in Encampment, JB’s Stop-N-Shop in Medicine Bow, the Country Store and Shively Hardware in Saratoga, the Ten Mile Inn north of Saratoga, and Rendezvous Creekside in Ryan Park.
