The last of the public closure restrictions in the area of this summer’s Badger Creek Fire were lifted Monday. The Forest Service announced that lack of fire activity and consistent moisture in the Medicine Bow National Forest in southern Albany County has produced significant cooling across the burn area. Smoke has not been reported in the last two weeks, although the statement cautioned that some areas may still be smoldering. Trees still standing but weakened by the fire also pose a danger to visitors. Forest areas on either side of State Highway 230 between Woods Landing and the Colorado State line have been closed since mid-June. The Badger Creek Fire burned 21,3210 acres. It started June 10th. No specific cause has been announced but investigators said early on that human activity was involved. The fire won’t be officially declared out until after the first significant snowfalls of the fall or winter season.
