At Glendo Reservoir in eastern Wyoming, two people, one reportedly from Colorado, died Saturday after their side-by-side vehicle plunged into the icy waters during an ice fishing trip.
On Sunday evening, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office released a social media post saying that county dive teams were called to assist in recovery operations.
Located in Glendo State Park, roughly 30 miles southeast of Douglas, Wyoming, the reservoir is a popular year-round fishing destination.
According to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, on Saturday, February 15th, divers were called to help locate two individuals after receiving reports that they and their side-by-side had fallen through the ice into Glendo Reservoir.
Albany County divers arrived on scene at approximately 5:00pm on Saturday evening. However, due to adverse weather and unsafe ice, the divers determined that it was too dangerous to conduct operations at that time.
On Sunday morning, when weather conditions improved, divers were able to safely enter the water. They successfully located and recovered both victims and their vehicle.
The identity of the two individuals remains unknown at this time. Additionally, it is unclear who made the original 911 call, the victims or a witness.
Bigfoot99 reached out to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office for more information about the incident. Albany County Sheriff Aaron Appelhans referred reporter Matt Copeland to the Platte County Sheriff’s Office. However, our reporter was told that Platte County Sheriff David Russell was unavailable due to the President’s Day holiday.
In its social media post, the Albany County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Platte County Sheriff’s Office, Wyoming State Parks, Wyoming Game and Fish, Glendo Fire and EMS, and the Natrona County Search and Rescue Dive Team for their assistance in the recovery process.
The Albany County Sheriff’s Office strongly advises against accessing the ice from the marina side of Glendo Reservoir, as a large channel was cut during the recovery operation, making the area even more hazardous than is typical this time of year.
The public is being asked to exercise extreme caution when traveling on frozen bodies of water, as ice conditions can be unpredictable and dangerous.
