Trouble on the line.

Multiple carmen, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Green River, recently lost their jobs.

Word began to spread last week that local carmen had been laid-off and the Green River repair shop was being closed. One carman reported that 17 employees were losing their positions.

While Union Pacific representatives did not confirm the number of employees being let go, they did confirm that changes are being made.

UP Senior Manager of Communications Mike Jaixen  said, “We’ve made some adjustments to align heavy locomotive and rail car repairs at locations that enhance freight fluidity.”

Jaixen clarified that enhancing freight fluidity means ensuring that freight trains move as efficiently as possible across the Union Pacific Railroad network. As a result, some work that was previously done in the Green River repair shop and the shop in Roper, Utah will be done at other locations.

“Light repairs, fueling and inspections will continue at Green River, and all impacted individuals are being offered other employment opportunities across the railroad,” he added.
