Governor Mark Gordon included a major renovation for the Veterans’ Home of Wyoming in his budget recommendation for lawmakers.
The governor included $87 million for the renovation and update to the facility, which is located in Buffalo. The facility consists of two connected communities: an Assisted Living Community and a Skilled Nursing Community, the latter providing care comparable to private nursing homes. Services focus on long-term care, with skilled nursing and assisted living options available.
The renovation project is intended to “update and modernize” the facility’s aging care unit, which serves residents in the capacity of an assisted living community.
Eventually, this project is expected to be partially funded by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs construction grant monies, though the project sits near the bottom of the government’s to-do-list.
It is ranked at 69 on a list of 73 eligible projects. It is also more expensive than most, the Wyoming Department of Health wrote in an October 2023 memo to the Joint Appropriations Committee.
Some lawmakers back the governor’s push for the needed remodel, noting that the facility is one of the top needs in the state’s capital construction project list.
In a statement, Governor Gordon wrote, “Those who have visited the facility recently know this is long overdue. Unfortunately, an appropriation for this project was attempted during the last general session but failed to make it to my desk.”
The Joint Appropriations Committee took no action when the item came up during its meeting earlier this month.
