Wyoming’s wild stretch of weather continued into Monday as temperatures warmed up, and winds reached 55-miles an hour down the interstate here.

As the outside temperatures rose in Rawlins on Monday, winds accelerated throughout the day.

Between 4 and 6 in the morning on Monday, when temperatures in Rawlins were between 9 and 12 degrees, winds were relatively calm at 10 miles per hour.

When the temperatures started climbing into double digits around 7 in the morning, nature’s wind machine picked up speed.  By 8 a.m., the average wind speed was clocked at 26 mph with gusts to 40 and 45.

At 9 a.m., with the temperature at 16 degrees, the wind was recorded at 35 by the National Weather Service.  Between 10 a.m. and noon, wind gusts in Rawlins exceeded 55 miles per hour as temperatures moved into the low and middle 20s.

In the early afternoon, with the temperature around 25 and 26 degrees, winds were generally in the 33-to-55 mile per hour range.

The WYDOT road and travel page was lit up orange and red most of the day Monday, advising travelers of the “extreme blow over risk.”  At 3:30 in the afternoon, winds were gusting in excess of 55 miles per hour at Wagonhound Road. Sustained wind speeds were 40 miles per hour.

Meteorologist Don Day reports that somewhere between 2-to-3 inches of snow fell in Saratoga over the weekend while 1-to-5 inches of snow fell in Rawlins.
