The Rawlins landfill is open again after winter storms blocked the road.

Heavy snowfall and blowing wind from last week’s Winter Storm Olive caused the City of Rawlins to shut down, including the landfill. After a week of being closed, the city’s landfill reopened Wednesday. Public Information Officer Mira Miller said city employees worked to clear the snow from the streets as soon as the travel ban was lifted.

The access road to the landfill was completely blocked by snow drifts. Miller said landfill employees worked around the clock to clear the way.

Bigfoot 99 has learned that outside contractors also used their equipment to help open the landfill road and in other areas of the city. While crews worked to plow a path, the city’s trash haulers were unable to dump garbage at the landfill. Miller said the weather helped keep things sanitary while the approach was cleared.

Landfill Foreman, Patrick Martinez, said the drifts along the access road were extremely high. He said by the time landfill workers finish clearing the road, it drifted closed again.

Miller said the city is working to ensure the landfill road remains passable. She said the drifts on either side of the road limit the amount of space available for traffic. Miller said to use caution when traveling on that section of road.

Drifting on the access road caused a delayed start Friday morning, but Public Works employees report the landfill opened by 10:00 a.m.
