The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is seeking information about the suspected bomb discovered at the Wyoming State Capitol Building on Monday. The Capitol Building was evacuated around 11 a.m. and workers inside the Herschler Building next door were ordered to shelter in place.

Wyoming Highway Patrol said they were investigating what they believe to be an explosive device outside the Capitol building. Around 9:45 a.m., someone one found an improvised explosive device on the Great Seal outside the Capitol and carried it into the building where authorities were alerted.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including a joint bomb squad with units from the Cheyenne Police Department and Laramie County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and were present most of the day.

A six-block stretch between Central and Care Avenues was closed off during the investigation. When the bomb was first reported, Governor Mark Gordon, State Treasurer Curt Meier, and State Auditor Kristi Racines were all gathered in the Capitol Extension for a regular meeting of the Wyoming Stable Token Commission. The meeting was stopped around 10 a.m.

The state’s top officials, including the Wyoming Governor, were among those who evacuated the building. Bomb-sniffing dogs patrolled the grounds of the state capital in search of evidence.

“We are investigating an ongoing incident at the State Capitol Building in Cheyenne. The building has been evacuated,” according to a highway patrol’s post on X. “Please avoid the area.”

In September 2024, a suspicious powder sent to the Wyoming Secretary of State’s Office prompted an evacuation of the nearby Herschler Building and on Jan. 6, 2021, state troopers locked down the Capitol and Herschler buildings during the riot at the U.S. Capitol.

On Tuesday afternoon, Governor Mark Gordon posted this on his Facebook page: “I am actively working with law enforcement and am monitoring the situation at the Capitol. This incident is an on-going investigation. All Capitol building employees have been notified of the situation. Employee safety is my highest priority and all Capitol building employees were evacuated out of an abundance of caution to ensure their safety.”
