Outgoing Senate President Dan Dockstader called the upper chamber to order. The morning session consisted of the swearing in of new members and ceremonial presentations before recessing until 2 p.m.

The first order of business in both chambers was election of leaders. Ogden Driskell was confirmed as Senate President.

In the House, Representative Albert Sommers was elected Speaker. Sommers was the only nomination offered from the floor. Sommers received 62 aye votes with no member in opposition.

In a joint statement, Senate President Driskell and Speaker Sommers called for decisiveness and decorum, as well as smart fiscal stewardship, as the chambers conduct the peoples’ business. Governor Mark Gordon will address lawmakers today with his State of the State address.
