Wyoming’s familiar Green River license plate, featuring a pale blue sky and a view of Squaretop Mountain, will be replaced with what state officials say is a more traditional looking flag design. Gone are any landscapes. The new, dark plate will feature Steamboat, the bucking rodeo horse and rider in white, over a dark, blue field featuring a silhouette of a bison bearing the state seal. The plate is rimmed with a red stripe with the word “Wyoming” in large letters at the top.
The Wyoming Department of Transportation released a video about the new plate. The video features Doug McGee with WYDOT Public Affairs and Steve Lund, the state Tag Plant Manager.
McGee said design limitations resulted in the new plate lacking Wyoming scenery like previous editions.
The new plate will be mandatory for every Wyoming driver in 2025. State law requires a new plate design every eight years. The new plates will be available in 2024 for people who renew their license plates for a two-year period.
In addition to the standard issue tag, the state will also offer specialized plates for the University of Wyoming alumni association and one for Wildlife Conservation.
