In Congress, Wyoming U.S. House Representative Harriet Hageman has introduced a bill designed to hold so-called “sanctuary cities,” which harbor illegal migrants, “accountable.”

The “No Student Visas for Sanctuary Cities Act”, introduced yesterday, would hold sanctuary cities, such as Denver, accountable for violating federal law. Hageman’s legislation amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to prohibit student visas being granted for institutions in such jurisdictions.

In an interview with Breitbart News, Representative Hageman described the bill this way: “Leftist proponents of open borders, or no borders at all, have infiltrated many of our states, cities, and counties and caused the so-called leaders within them to completely undermine the rule of law,” Hageman said.  “Instead of protecting their citizens, sanctuary city officials have chosen those here unlawfully — many of them members of international cartels and other transnational criminal organizations –- over their constituents.”

Co-sponsors of the bill include Representatives Brandon Gill (R-TX), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Troy Nehls (R-TX).

The legislation defines sanctuary jurisdictions as those that are “refusing to or prohibiting agencies from complying with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers,” “imposing unreasonable conditions” on ICE detainer compliance, “denying” ICE access to interview incarcerated aliens, or “otherwise impeding communication or information exchanges between the jurisdiction’s personnel” and federal immigration officials.

Wyoming’s sole representative in Congress sent a letter to President Donald Trump thanking him for his “bold leadership” on the issue of enforcing immigration laws.

In the letter to the President dated May 7, 2025, Representative Hageman tells Trump, “Your first 100 days resulted in operational control of the southern border, and your policies are poised to make further strides in ending the lawlessness the former administration inflicted upon us over the last four years.”
