In Washington, D.C. last week, Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder attended the signing ceremony at the White House where President Trump ordered the dismantling of the federal Department of Education.
The President’s executive order directs Secretary of Education Linda McMahon to “take all necessary steps to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education.”
Trump said his administration will close the department beyond its “core necessities,” preserving its core responsibilities for Title I funding for low-income schools, Pell grants, and money for children with disabilities.
Wyoming public schools received 13% of their funding from the federal government during the 2021-22 school year. The Wyoming Department of Education reports that federal funds for 2025-26 are expected to amount to approximately $351 million.
Degenfelder attended the signing of the order in the East Room of the White House in Washington.
Secretary Degenfelder will join Bigfoot 99 on the Morning Show on April 10th.
The Secretary of Education said the executive order to abolish the Department of Education is “a huge win for students, parents and teachers across the country.”
Degenfelder said the streamlining means the money now absorbed by bureaucratic layers will flow to classrooms and not to government office workers who don’t contribute to education.
Degenfelder painted the move as a streamlining of government bureaucracy and that Wyoming will see “no reduction in “core statutory functions.”
