Hold onto your hat. From the ‘tell us something you don’t know’ file, Wyoming has been living through the windiest month of March in more than 20 years.
The Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service has put some numbers on what you already know. The first 24 days of March have been exceptionally windy.
The bar chart illustrating wind speeds shows that at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, the average wind speed is clocking at 15.02 miles per hour. Last year, the average wind speed was less than 12 miles per hour. The average wind speed clocks around 13 mile per hour.
Cheyenne has seen wind gusts of 50 mph or greater on 8 separate days this month so far, which ties 2009 for the most 50+mph gust days in the month of March. The 10 High Wind Warnings issued by NWS Cheyenne so far this month is the second highest on record for March.
