For Wyoming football fans, there’s no bigger game, during any season, than the Border War. The Cowboys will face Colorado State University in Laramie on Saturday.

Head Coach Jay Sawvel addressed the rivalry game during Monday’s news conference. The big question for Wyoming reporters centered around “What impact does the firing of CSU Head Coach Jay Norvelle, on Sunday, have on this week’s big game?”

In Fort Collins, CSU Athletic Director John Weber admitted that the decision to fire Norvell in the middle of his fourth season because, quote, “We needed a different direction and different leadership as we move forward.” Weber said progress “had stalled” this season.

CSU is 2-5 overall with a four-point win over Northern Colorado and a 49-21 win over Fresno State. The Bulldogs are 5-2 overall, 2-1 in the conference.

Sawvel addressed his decision earlier this week to remove offensive coordinator Jay Johnson from play-calling duties following a loss to Air Force Saturday. Wide receivers coach Jovon Bouknigh, a former Cowboy who has a good rapport with players, took over the role immediately.

Johnson will remain on staff for now in an analyst role. The head coach said his team needs to improve its levels of play during the Border War following last week’s loss to Air Force.

The 117th edition of the Border War kicks off Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. inside War Memorial Stadium.

CSU leads the all-time series with Wyoming 60-51-5. In the post-World War II era, the Cowboys lead the series with 46 wins and 33 losses.

The Rams will enjoy a bye week next week after Saturday’s Border War matchup in Laramie.
