In sports, Wyoming rolled Saturday on the coast, besting San Jose State 88-77 to put a bow on the regular season.
Late in the game, with the momentum starting to shift to the Spartans, senior Leland Walker nailed a back breaking three-point shot.
Keith Kelly had the call as Wyoming put the game away. Forward Gavin Gores, the 6-8, 210-pound power forward, led the Cowboys with a career-high 20 points – shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Walker added 13 points on the night and seven assists.
The Cowboys head into the Mountain West Tournament on a strong note, closing out the regular season with five wins in a six-game stretch.
Sundance Wicks talked about his team’s ability to build a 21-point lead early and maintain the double-figure edge throughout the second half.
Gores played without the protective mask he wore throughout much of the early season because of an injury. The freshman played as if unleashed, matching his career high of 15 points only 12 minutes into the game. Coach Wicks said the freshman was probably happy to not be wearing the mask.
Wyoming will face No. 9 Seed UNLV in the opening round of the Mountain West tournament play on Wednesday afternoon. The Cowboys blasted the Rebels 98-66 in Laramie during their only regular-season matchup in January. Coach Wicks said the Cowboys and the Rebels are both different teams going into this week’s matchup. Tip is set for one p.m. Wednesday afternoon, here on Bigfoot 99.
