Wyoming guard Brendan Wenzel lead a second-half Cowboy comeback Saturday with 14 points in the frame to overcome a 12-point deficit for a huge win over the Fresno State bulldogs.
It was an uphill climb for Wyoming, but the Cowboys rode Wenzel and his hot hand down the stretch.
Keith Kelly and Kevin McKinney as Wyoming took the lead late with the Wenzel slam.
The Bulldogs retook a one-point lead with seven seconds left on the clock. Wyoming called a timeout after the bucket and Aquel Kot put up the game winner for the 68-67 win as time ran out.
Wenzel’s relentless play down the stretch was the difference in the game. Associate head coach Tim DeWeese said yesterday that Wenzel broke his shooting slump in conference play at the right time. DeWeese said the Cowboys need Wenzel to be good.
The athletic Wenzel put up 17 points Saturday in 36 minutes on the floor.
The Cowboys are off during the week this week as they enjoy a break. Wyoming will be back in action on Saturday against Nevada.
The Wolfpack are 15-2 overall on the season and 2-1 in conference play after losing to Boise State 64-56 on Friday night. Nevada will be at San Diego State tomorrow night before coming to Laramie on Saturday.
Wyoming and Nevada tip at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
