The Wyoming Cowboys snuffed Colorado State on Saturday, 28-0 in the final Border War as conference foes.

The scoring came early and continued throughout the first half. Wyoming scored on two of its three opening drives to take a 21-nothing shutout into the locker room. Wyoming continued to dominate in the second half, scoring again at the 10:51 mark of the third.

Keith Kelley had the call as Wyoming, wearing all-black uniforms in a salute to coal, dominated the Rams from start to finish.

Running back Sam Scott, who recorded 68 yards on the game, added another touchdown on a 37-yard run at the 10:51 mark of the third quarter.

The sold-out crowd, inside the War, celebrated the second shut-out win as Wyoming rushed across the field to take back the most celebrated trophy in college football—the Bronze Boot.

CSU quarterback Jackson Brousseau threw his first interception of the season on the Rams second drive of the game. A flubbed snap at the goal line near the end of the fourth quarter ruined CSU’s chance to avoid the goose-egg score.

Both teams went through coaching shakeups in the week leading up to the game. In Fort Collins, Head Coach Jay Norvell was fired on Sunday. Tyson Summers was elevated from defensive coordinator head coach. Grant Chestnut was promoted to offensive coordinator.

On Tuesday, backup quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi left the team.

In Laramie, offensive coordinator Jay Johnson was removed as offensive coordinator. Jovon Bouknight took over the job. Wyoming’s offensive output was the proof in the pudding.

The Cowboys made the right decision, looking at the numbers and the result. The Pokes put up more than 372 yards of offense—160 passing, 212 yards on the ground. Cowboys Head Coach Jay Sawvel put it this way in a post-game interview aired on CBS.

Talking to the Wyoming radio audience a short time later, Sawvel said the Wyoming players restored the coveted Bronze Boot to the empty display case that served as a daily reminder to the players for the last year.

The headline in the Colorado State Coloradoan on Sunday stated simply, “Wyoming Crushes Colorado State in First Game after Norvell.” The lead sentence to the story which includes a photograph of the Cowboys celebrating in their coal black uniforms.  The lost season became worse,” Kyle Lytle writes. “What a grim week it’s been for the Colorado State football program.”

The Cowboys hit the road this week for a game at San Diego State for a 5 p.m. MT start on the CBS Sports Network.

The 6-1 Aztecs became bowl eligible this year with a 23-0 shutout of Fresno State on Saturday.

Elsewhere in the Mountain West:

Boise State improved to 4-0 in conference play with a Friday night beatdown of Nevada 24-3.

New Mexico crushed Utah State 33-14.
