The Wyoming Cowgirls are in Texas will begin practicing today for Monday night’s matchup with UCLA in the opening round of the NCAA Women’s tournament. The players arrived in Austin on Tuesday after learning of their 14th place-seeding Monday night. Wyoming enters the tournament on a six-game winning streak. They pulled off a string of upsets at the Mountain West Tournament to earn an automatic berth to the Big Dance.

 

That was associate head coach Heather Ezell after the Cowgirls overpowered second-seed UNLV with a barrage of triples in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain West Tournament last week. The Cowgirls scored 15 triples in the dominating 76-52 win.

Wyoming went on to beat Boise State the next night before pulling off the big three-point win over fourth-seed Fresno State in the Championship Game.

UCLA is making its fifth straight appearance at the NCAA tournament. The Bruins are playing short-handed and it showed in the 75-55 loss in the PAC 12 tournament final to first seed Stanford on March 7th.

Monday’s night matchup will be broadcast on ESPN. The Cowgirls can also be heard, as always, on KBDY – 102.1 FM. The pregame show with Keith Kelly gets underway at 7:30. The winner between UCLA and Wyoming will advance to face No. 6 seed Texas or No. 11 Bradley in the second round.

College Insider has named Marcus Williams as a finalist for the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year award. Williams is one of 30 finalists. Williams proved he belongs in the running by scoring nearly 15 points per game to rank 14 in the conference. The 6’7″ guard from Seattle, Washington, has already been named Mountain West Freshman of the Year. The recipient of the Kyle Macy national award will be announced April 1.
