It’s a big day in Laramie and across Wyoming. The Wyoming Cowgirls, fresh off winning the Mountain West Championship, will find out who they’ll play in the first round of the Big Dance during tonight’s NCAA Selection Show. The tournament begins on Sunday in Texas.

Will the Cowgirls play in San Antonio, Austin or San Marcos? The question will be answered on ESPN tonight at 5 p.m. Cowgirls earned an automatic bid to this year’s tournament with a 59-56 win over Fresno State in the Mountain West Title game on Wednesday. The win capped a tournament run for the ages. The Cowgirls entered the tournament as a seventh-seed. Their solid defense proved to be the difference maker all the way through to the final play of the championship game.

Keith Kelly had the call as Alba Sanchez Ramos blocked a game-tying shot from Haley Cavinder, one of big guns on the Bulldogs.

Wyoming Head Coach Gerald Mattinson said after the game that it was fitting that a defensive play sealed the win and a trip to the Dance.

Prior to the start of the conference tournament last week, the Cowgirls hadn’t played in 24 days due to issues related to the coronavirus pandemic before winning four games in four days in the conference tournament. Now they’ll spend the week ready to get back into action.

A pep rally open to the public is set for 4 p.m. this afternoon inside the Arena Auditorium prior to the selection show. ESPN will announce the brackets and punch Wyoming’s ticket beginning at 5 p.m.

High School Sports

The postseason honors for the indoor track and wrestling seasons have been released. Starting on the track, the indoor season came to a close with four Rawlins Lady Outlaws earned post recognition on the All-State list. To qualify each student athlete must finish in the top two of their event.

Sydney Thorvaldson joins an elite group with her 4th straight post-season honor. The long-distance dominator who is headed to Arkansas University earned her fourth straight post-season honor. Thorvaldson earned the top spot along with teammates Trista Palmer, Zoe Law, and Eva Nitschke in the Girls 1600 Spring Medley.

During the regular season Thorvaldson set the top mark in the 800 meter event, and broke two records in the mile and two-mile with times of 4:46, and 10:17. The two mile time was over a minute better than the second place time.

High School Wrestling

A pair of Carbon County grapplers have been named to the All-State roster. Like in track, to be named All-State, a wrestler must reach the title match for their respective weight class.

For the Rawlins Outlaws it was 113-pounder Zachery Covolo who placed second. The freshman earned 23 wins on the season against just two losses. Saratoga’s Josiah Stockwell made it to the championship bout where he took home silver. Stockwell finished his impressive campaign at 21 and 7 as an underclassman.
