The Wyoming Cowgirls basketball season came to an end Thursday night with a 65-48 loss in the opening round of post-season play to Texas Tech at home in the Arena Auditorium.
The Wyoming women were ahead by one—18-17—at the end of the opening quarter but trailed the rest of the way in the loss. Texas Tech took control of the game in the second frame, keeping Wyoming to just single digit scores in the next two quarters. Texas Tech led the game for 28 and a half minutes.
David Settle had the final call on the Wyoming Sports Network at the end of a disappointing opening round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament. Texas Tech took control of the game early in the second quarter and led the rest of the way. Backdoor cuts were the key to the Red Raiders’ success as they shut down Wyoming’s offense and built a ten point lead by the half.
The Red Raiders opened the third quarter with five consecutive points.
Malene Pedersen fought back and helped the Cowgirls cut the lead with a pair of buckets. Allyson Fertig and Pedersen continued to scratch back at the Red Raiders lead in the fourth but the damage was done and the Cowgirls failed to climb back into the game.
Wyoming head coach Heather Ezell said the Raiders hit some backbreaking shots in the third quarter that held off the inroads her team was beginning to make.
Fertig finished the game with a team-best 17 points and 15 rebounds. She closes her storied Cowgirl career as the program’s and Mountain West’s all-time leader in rebounds with 1,216.
The Cowgirls close the season 22-12.
