It’s party time in Las Vegas. The Wyoming Cowgirls will play in tonight’s Mountain West Championship game after Tuesday night’s dominating 57-45 win over Fresno State in the semifinal round.

Wyoming will face San Diego State tonight in the championship game. The Cowgirls went 2-0 against the Aztecs in the regular season, winning at home on January 11th 78-71. The Cowgirls swept the regular season matchup with a win at San Diego State on February 8th 64-51. The Aztecs are back in the title game for the second straight year.

Last night, the Cowgirls jumped out to an 11-2 lead early against the Bulldogs. Fresno State narrowed the lead, but Wyoming maintained a small lead through the first half, leading 24-23 at the break. The Cowgirls dominated the third period, holding the Bulldogs to 33 percent shooting from the floor to pull ahead 44-34. Wyoming pushed their lead to 19 in the fourth quarter.

David Settle had the call in the second half last night.

Three Cowgirls finished the contest in double figures. Allyson Fertig led with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Malene Pedersen added 14. Emily Mellema put up 11 points in the win. Wyoming was plus-17 on the glass with 25 rebounds against the Bulldogs.

The Cowgirls now move onto play in the title game for the second time in three years.

Wyoming Assistant Head Coach Fallon Lewis said tonight’s championship game against San Diego State will feel like “a home game” because of the large contingent of fans from the Cowboy State who showed up in Las Vegas for the tournament.

The coach praised the leadership of the Cowgirls seniors for last night’s win. Tonight, Wyoming will face an opponent in San Diego who is familiar.

The 24-9 Aztecs advanced to tonight’s championship game by upsetting No. 1 seed UNLV 71-59 in the first semifinal on Tuesday.  UW will take on No. 4 San Diego State tonight in the title game. Bigfoot 99 will have the radio broadcast. Tip is set for at 8:30 p.m. We’ll be on the air with the pregame show at 8.
