The Wyoming Cowgirls held on against the UNLV Lady Rebels on Senior Night inside the Arena Auditorium in a 71-66 win.

David Settle had the final call last night after the Wyoming women fought back after trailing by two at halftime 36-34. With the win, the Cowgirls clinched the #2 spot at the close of the regular season with a 14-4 conference record.

UNLV built a 32-25 lead in the 2nd quarter but late threes, two from Tess Barnes and one from Melena Petersen, cut the Rebels lead. Each team scored 15 points in the third quarter with the lead changing eight times.

Petersen, a junior, finished the night with 27 points. Seniors Emily Mellema and Allyson Fertig added 17 and 16 points for the Cowgirls.

Head Coach Heather Ezell said the game came down to “toughness,” withstanding UNLV runs and then responding with big runs from Wyoming.

Including this win, the Cowgirls have won 20-plus contests in a season, for the second time in three seasons under Ezell. The 14 conference victories are the most for UW in a single season in program history.

The Wyoming women now enter the Mountain West Conference next week as the No. 2 seed. The Cowgirls will play the winner of the Air Force – Utah State game at 6 p.m. on Monday evening. We’ll have the game for you here on Bigfoot 99.
