The Wyoming Cowgirls toughed out a 78-71 win over San Diego State in the Arena Auditorium Saturday afternoon.
Senior Cowgirl Allyson Fertig of Glendo, Wyoming chipped in another 20-point performance. Fertig shot 21 on the night. Wyoming’s best defensive stopper, Emily Mellema, who put up 18, came up big with less than a minute remaining.
David Settle had the call on the Cowgirls sports network as the Wyoming women shot a season high 54.2 percent from the floor. On the night, the Cowgirls shot 26-of-48 from the field and hit 7-of-13 from 3-point range as Wyoming secured the big home win.
The Aztecs fought Wyoming all game long. The Cowgirls were up by three at the end of the first. San Diego State was up by three at the half. Wyoming dominated the third period with tough defense and finished the fourth with a one-point edge.
With the win in the books, Cowgirls Head Coach Heather Ezell talked about Wyoming toughness and the will to get back-to-back stops.
Wyoming will remain in Laramie for a Wednesday night matchup with Nevada. Tip time is set for 6:30 p.m. Bigfoot 99 will broadcast the game beginning with pregame show starting at 6.
Wyoming is now 9-7 overall, 3-1 in conference play.
