The Wyoming Cowboys hung tough against San Diego State through the first half Saturday night, but lost by a bucket, 72-69, after a valiant fight on Senior Night in the Arena Auditorium.
The Aztecs came into Laramie holding down the four-spot in Mountain West standings with the tournament starting next week.
Despite some dry spells where Wyoming went three minutes without a score, the Cowboys never stopped battling. The Pokes nearly erased the Aztecs’ eight-point lead with a minute and a half to go in the game. Wyoming had a chance to tie the game as time ran out but could not get the shot off before the buzzer.
Keith Kelly and Kevin McKinney had the heartbreaking call.
The seniors led the way in scoring. Obi Agbim, in his final game at home, put up 21. Dontaie Allen added 16.
Wyoming miscues led to the loss. The Cowboys turned the ball over 17 times, resulting in 20 Aztec points. At the same time, the Cowboys shot just 21 percent from the arc in the second half but found a way to stay in the game.
Cowboys Head Coach Sundance Wicks started off his postgame interview by thanking the fans who came out on Senior night –and all year long—to cheer on the Cowboys.
As he always does, Wicks turned to his inner philosopher to take the long view of the Wyoming basketball team and what he’s building in his first year as head coach.
The Cowboys will bring down the curtain on the regular season Tuesday night with a trip to Fresno State. Wyoming beat the Bulldogs 83-72 at their first meeting in Laramie on January 28. Tomorrow night’s game tips at 8 p.m. with the pregame show set for 7:30 here on Bigfoot 99.
