“Too little, too late” sums up Wyoming’s play in Boulder Saturday night.
Wyoming fell to Colorado 37-20. The Cowboys made it a 10-point game with 4:32 remaining late but could not hold on for the win.
Keith Kelly and Kevin McKinney had the call as Durr battled two C-U defenders to make the catch following an 80-yard drive on 13 plays. Despite the touchdown drive, Wyoming mismanaged the clock and found themselves without the time needed to get back into the game.
A few minutes later, Wyoming bit on a play fake and CU quarterback Kaden Salter ran the ball 35 yards to the endzone for the final score. The point after made it 37-20 with less than two minutes on the clock.
Anderson was 11 of 25 with 176 yards and two touchdowns. Durr was the top receiver for the Cowboys with eight catches for 50 yards and the touchdown. For the Buffs, Salter was 18 of 28 with three touchdowns.
Defensively, Wyoming struggled on third and fourth downs most of the night.
After the loss, Head Coach Jay Sawvel acknowledged that the Cowboys defense was beat all night long. Too many mistakes, is how Sawvel put it.
The head coach did see a lot of positives but Wyoming heads into a bye week after a second straight loss to nationally recognized teams. The Cowboys fell at home a week earlier to Utah 31-6.
The Pokes recorded 347 yards of total offense with 182 yards throwing the air and 165 on the ground. Colorado recorded 304 yards through the air against the Cowboy defense. Colorado also rushed for 193 yards for 497 yards of total offense.
With the loss before a sold-out crowd, Wyoming wraps up conference play with a 2-2 record.
Following the bye week, the Cowboys will be back in action on October 4 with a five o’clock kickoff against UNLV inside War Memorial Stadium.
Elsewhere in the Mountain West, CSU fell to UTSA 17-16.
Rams Head Coach Jay Norvell made a change at quarterback. Jackson Brousseau replaced starter Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi.
Brousseau entered the game with 11:46 to go in the fourth quarter as the Rams trailed 10-3. Brousseau led touchdown drives on his two drives, but CSU lost after a two-point try failed with less than a minute to go.
Brousseau ended the game 10-12 for 78 yards and a touchdown pass. He also had a run for a first down.
Fowler-Nicolosi was 14-25 for 176 yards.
UNLV improved to 4-0 with 41-38 win over Miami Ohio.
San Jose State beat Idaho 31-28.
Nevada fell on the road to Western Kentucky 31-16.
Boise State beat Air Force 49-37.
Utah State overwhelmed McNeese 48-7.
San Diego State overwhelmed Cal 34-0.
Fresno State edged Hawaii 23-21.
