The Wyoming Cowboys fell to old foe UTEP 78-67 in the championship game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso, Texas Thursday night.

Wyoming had a tough night from the start with the Miners controlling the physical style of play from the opening buzzer. The Cowboys didn’t have any good looks at the basket and finished the night shooting 34 percent from the field. UTEP also kept the best three-point shooting team in the country to just 22 percent from long range.

The Cowboys stayed in the game through the second half at the free throw line.

Officiating also played a role in keeping the game out-of-sorts. Three technical fouls were called on Wyoming. Mason Walters led the Pokes with 16 points for a season-high and most in his Wyoming career but fouled out of the game. All in all, it was tough up-hill battle all night with the win out of reach. Head coach Jeff Linder was still sorting out the good from the bad during the post-game interview.

The Cowboys have Christmas off. Wyoming will wrap up conference play on the road at BYU on Saturday, December 30th.
