Wyoming head football coach Jay Sawvel said he planned to have an offensive coordinator hired by the weekend. Sawvel can check it off his to do list.

Jay Johnson, who spent the previous four seasons as play caller and quarterback’s coach at Michigan State, will reportedly lead Wyoming’s offense.

That’s the story according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg.

Sawvel and Johnson were on the same staff at Minnesota in 2016.

There was joy in Michigan apparently. Here’s how the Spartan Wire reported the story. “Michigan State fans have had a lot of displeasure the last few years with the team’s offensive coordinator Jay Johnson. It came, with pleasure, when the fanbase knew Johnson would be departing the program after his tenure with a program “worst performance” against Penn State.”

The tweet from ESPN’s Rittnberg reads, “Sources: Wyoming is expected to hire Jay Johnson as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Johnson most recently was OC at Michigan State and worked with new Wyoming coach Jay Sawvel at Minnesota in 2016. He also has overseen offenses at Colorado and Louisiana.

The responses to Rittenberg’s tweet were largely brutal.

Johnson, 54, will replace Tim Polasek, who accepted the head coaching position at North Dakota State last month after spending the previous three seasons in Laramie.

Johnson previously worked with the new Wyoming head coach while at Minnesota back in 2016. Johnson was brought to Michigan State by Mel Tucker in 2020 after coaching with him at Colorado.
