In sports, Wyoming lost some close games at the War in the last year, including the home opener to the University of Idaho that ended in a 13-7 loss.
Head Coach Jay Sawvel opened his news conference this with that sore memory from last year. It was his debut, and at the top of his mind last week.
Coach Sawvel said the War always features a great, game-time atmosphere filled with lots of energy. Attendance was not bad for the game at Akron last Thursday. The school reported just over 9,000 fans attended the season opener for both teams. They watched Wyoming earn a 10-0 shut-out.
The Panthers come to Laramie this week. Northern Iowa features a new head coach, Todd Stepsis. Stepsis joins the Panthers after a six-year stint as the head coach at Drake University. He has also served as Drake’s offensive coordinator for the past three seasons.
Coach Sawvel talked about his counterpart at Northern Iowa during the press conference earlier this week.
The University of Northern Iowa is coming off a week one win, at home, over Butler. The final score was 38-14.
Coach Stepsis summed up the game this way:
Wyoming and Northern Iowa are set to kick off on Saturday at 2 p.m. The theme at the War on Saturday is “Gold Out,” and fans are encouraged to wear their Wyoming gold colors.
