Winter storm Wesley triggers I-80 closures
BY Jim O’Reilly
An early spring snow storm named Wesley continues to impact travel across much of the heartland, from Wyoming to Minnesota.
In Nebraska, the State Patrol was sending additional troopers into the state’s panhandle. This morning, Interstate 80 is closed in both directions across Nebraska. Officials there report “critical disruptions” are affecting many secondary roads, as well.
The eastbound lanes on I-80 from Cheyenne to Kimball, Nebraska closed Wednesday afternoon with only local Wyoming traffic allowed. WYDOT is estimating the interstate could open around noon today or later this afternoon.
In Colorado, Governor Jared Polis activated the National Guard in case it is needed to rescue stranded motorists. About half of the flights at Denver International Airport were cancelled ahead of the storm. About two and a half feet of snow was expected to fall in parts of eastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota.
Carbon County has escaped the worst impacts of the storm. Roads here are slick with snowfall, but all roads are open.
