Wednesday was the first day of the early signing period for college football teams across. The Wyoming Cowboys inked deals with 15 high school athletes, including eight ranked as top 20 players in their home states. Head Coach Craig Bohl said developing high school talent is the meat and potatoes of Wyoming football.
The recruiting class includes the top-ranked senior from Rock Springs, Issac Schoenfield. The 6-5, 220-pound tight end led the Tigers to the state championship game. UW offered Schoenfeld a scholarship after his junior season when he was named to the Class 4A all-state team on both offense and defense. Ian McGrew, UW Director of Recruiting, profiled Schoenfeld.
Schoenfeld was the #1 ranked recruit in Wyoming, and the only in-state payer in the 2022 recruiting class. Eight other states are represented on the roster. Colorado and Nebraska have three signees each, followed by two each from California and Texas. The roster also includes players from Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.
This year’s position breakdown sees six recruits on the defensive side of the ball and nine on offense. Of the defensive signees: three are defensive backs, two are defensive linemen and one is a linebacker. Offensively, UW signed four offensive lineman, two wide receivers, one quarterback, one running back and one tight end.
The quarterback in the groups is Caden Becker who is ranked the Number 11 recruit out of Nebraska.
Coach Bohl said they were able to get out and recruit the old-fashioned way this year, including visits, in-season evaluations and camps. It wasn’t all video and zoom meetings. Coach Bohl said the players announced yesterday are all bought into what Wyoming has to offer.
The national letter-of-intent early signing period for football began on Wednesday, Dec. 15 and will conclude on Friday, Dec. 17.
