Mountain West Champion Utah State knocked off PAC-12 opponent Oregon State 24-13 in the LA Bowl Saturday night. The Aggies, who won only a single game last year, finished off their improbable season with backup quarterback Cooper Legas putting on show.
Oregon State wasted little time to score. The Beavers needed only three plays and 52-seconds to put 7 on the board. The Aggies struggled through the first half, unable to generate much offense. When the second quarter started, quarterback Logan Bonner stood on the sideline with his helmet in hand. Bonner had limped off the field after taking a hard tackle on a run play in the first quarter. Legas, who had never thrown a pass in a college game, stepped out of the first huddle of the quarter and immediately put the Aggies on the board immediately with a 62-yard strike to Deven Thompkins.
Legas’ first career pass was a thing of beauty. Utah State tied up the game with a point after kick. Later in the 2nd quarter they took the lead and never relinquished it.
Earlier Saturday in the New Mexico Bow, Fresno State defeated UTEP 34-21.
The Wyoming Cowboys take on Kent State in the Famous Potato Bowl tomorrow. After a wild up and down season that saw a 4-0 start eclipsed by a four-game losing streak. When all hoped seemed to be lost, Wyoming redeemed itself with epic wins in the Border War and against conference-leading Utah State, leaving fans wondering where this team had been. The Cowboys ended up bowl eligible at 6-6. Head Coach Craig Bohl said he’s excited to have one more game on the schedule.
Based on the season’s track record, Coach Bohl may not know which Cowboy team will show up to play tomorrow. It may not matter. Truth is, Potato Bowl organizers may have chosen Wyoming as much for Cowboy fans as for the team. They will show up. Cowboy fans are almost as famous at the Potato Bowl. The director of tomorrow’s festivities, Kevin McDonald said Cowboy said he’s looking forward to the brown and gold.
Last year, fans weren’t allowed into the Bowl game. Teams flew in and flew out without any of the usual fanfare and activities that surround a post-season game. The festivities will be back to normal for tomorrow’s matchup.
The Golden Flashes of Kent State are the 2021 MAC runner-ups after going 7-5 in the regular season. They fell to Northern Illinois in the Mid-Atlantic title Game on December 4. Wyoming beat NIU 50-43 on September 11. Wyoming is a three point favorite with the over-under set at 58.5.
Kickoff tomorrow is 1:30 here on Bigfoot 99.
