The weather was sunny and mild in Casper Thursday, providing a great start the start of the three-day Wyoming Outdoor Expo.

Put on by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the Outdoor Expo is largest, free outdoor learning event in the state with activities for adults and kids. It’s held at the Ford Wyoming Center. Families can visit more than 70 booths to learn skills like fly casting, using binoculars, navigating using a compass and find a good place to hunt, fish or camp in Wyoming.

Elk Mountain Game Warden Jake Miller was manning one of the outdoor booths yesterday. Miller said the sunny weather in Casper brought a lot of people out to the Expo on the first day.

The promotional video at the Game and Fish web site shows an exciting mix of hands-on workshops from shooting and archery to flying a tie, from orienteering to paddling a canoe.

Two “Step One” experiences are available tomorrow. Both are individualized experiences to help anyone take a first step toward learning to hunt. One is an introduction to shooting a compound bow. The other is a mentored experience in the method of hunting you are interested in: Shotgun, rifle, archery or muzzleloader. Each experience lasts about two hours. You have to register online at the Game and Fish Outdoor Expo web site. Space is limited.

Game and Fish encourages families to turn out because the Expo can broaden ideas about exploring the outside. Dog training and outdoor photography are also on the schedule. Miller was enjoying the nice weather himself yesterday at one of the outdoor booths.

Expo is an event in partnership between Game and Fish, the Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources. It’s open to the public again today and tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
