An unidentified man with an active warrant for his arrest was shot and killed Saturday night by Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers after the suspect fired at officers. The incident occurred in Crook County along Interstate 90 around milepost 184.
Police say the same man opened fire on them Friday night, as well, but escaped into the darkness.
According to news release from Sgt. Jeremy Beck, the first encounter happened on Friday night around 10:10 p.m. A trooper stopped the man, who was spotted walking along I-90. An identification check turned up the active warrant for the man’s arrest. The trooper requested backup from the Crook County Sheriff’s Department. When law enforcement attempted to take the man into custody, he produced a gun and fired several shots before fleeing into the night. Police were unable to locate him.
On Saturday morning, shortly after 11:00 a.m., law enforcement located the man in the same vicinity on I-90 near Sundance. The suspect again opened fire. Police returned the gunfire striking the man. The report said the man was taken into custody, given medical attention but was pronounced dead a short time later.
No law enforcement officers were injured during either shootout. The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case.
