Just last month, Wyoming’s largest news organization appeared hopeful that Liz Cheney could pull out a win in next week’s Republican primary race for the U.S. House. For at least a week the bold headline on the Casper Star Tribune website proclaimed to its worried readership, “Cheney behind in poll, but experts say it’s still early.”
The time is late now. The Wyoming’s Primary Election is Tuesday. Down to the wire, Cheney has fallen even further behind her challenger, Harriet Hageman.
Trump-endorsed Harriet Hageman is leading Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) by 28-point margin among Republican voters likely to vote in the Wyoming GOP primary, according to a poll out Thursday from the University of Wyoming’s Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center (WYSAC).
The survey conducted between July 25th and August 6th showed Hageman with 57 percent of the vote to Cheney’s 28 percent. The poll surveyed 562 voters.
It’s an epic low point for a political transplant who used the family name to punch her ticket to Congress. The sense of betrayal among Wyoming Republicans is strong, and quantified by another number in the poll – 41 percent of the respondents said they are voting against Cheney as opposed to strongly supporting Hageman or another candidate.
The poll also shows that Cheney’s last hope—Wyoming Democrats—cannot save her now.
Even if every Democrat in the state crossed party lines to vote for the face of the January 6 Committee, and it looks like thousands will, Cheney will not be able to survive the self-inflicted political wounds of her “never Trump” brand of politics.
Cheney announced earlier this week that she will make an election night announcement at a campaign event in Jackson Hole after the results are announced.
