A Rawlins resident is arranging a memorial event to mark the memory of 9/11.

Monday, September 11th, marks the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks that killed 2,977 Americans. Every year since that terrible day, Tink Day has personally arranged a memorial service to honor those who died. This year, Day said she’ll have a small service on the south lawn of the Carbon County Courthouse in Rawlins at 5:30 pm.

Day said Rawlins resident, Sandra Sullivan, typically sings the National Anthem during her September 11th memorial events.

Because September 11th falls on a Monday this year, Day said the memorial service needed to be less ambitious. Last year, Day arranged a 5K marathon and stair climb at the Rawlins High School Outlaw Stadium football field. Participants in the stair climb walked up the stadium stairs 22 times to represent the 110 floors of the Twin Towers. Day said the event raised $4,000 for Will’s Warriors, a Cystic Fibrosis charity.

Day is a former first responder. Day said during last year’s 9/11 memorial event, she and other emergency service personnel performed a flag relay on the Rawlins High School football field.

Day said this year’s event is more in line with her original idea of having people gather to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Since the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Day said she wanted to honor the people that protect us and to remind everyone what it means to be an American.

Day said the current political divide has made people forget how great our country truly is. She said despite the ups and downs of our society, America remains a beacon of hope and liberty.

Tink Day’s memorial service is Monday, September 11th at 5:30pm on the south side of the Carbon County Courthouse.
