On Halloween, Saratoga and Encampment National Honors Society students collected cans to give to the needy.

Honor students from Encampment K-12 nd Saratoga Middle High School asked residents to give out non-perishable food items, as well as candy for Halloween. The students, who call themselves the Encampatoga National Honors Society, are led by teachers Leslie McLinskey in Encampment, and Laura Sanchez in Saratoga.

Membership in the National Honors Society requires students to excel in four key areas. A student must have a GPA of at least 3.0, demonstrate a commitment to community service, show evidence of leadership, and exhibit high standards of honesty, integrity, and responsibility.

In a written statement provided to Bigfoot99, McLinskey said she currently has 11 juniors and seniors enrolled in the National Honors Society, or NHS. McLinskey said community service is an important aspect of NHS membership.

McLinskey said Saratoga science teacher Laura Sanchez came up with the idea of having students collect canned goods during Halloween. First Presbyterian Church Pastor David Cole will give the collected food items out during the holidays. In her email to Bigfoot99, McLinskey said the trick-or-treating project was an additional way for the Encampatoga students to help the community.

McLinskey said the Halloween can drive is part of an ongoing Encampment school food donation program. McLinskey said she won’t have the total number of canned goods collected during Halloween until the food drive ends later this week.

McLinskey said National Honors Society students also participate in a variety of other events throughout the year. She said the NHS students plan the Veterans Day Assembly, make the game programs for all home athletic events, build gratitude bulletin boards, create staff birthday cards, call donors for the local blood drives, and more.
