The first Hanna Elementary Community Trivia Night attracted contestants from across Carbon County.
On the evening of November 15th, teachers at Hanna Elementary School held a community trivia night. Nineteen teams of two to five people paid $25 a team to compete. Every member of the winning team received a $50 Amazon gift card.
Contestants were asked questions about literature, sports, and the history of Carbon County. When the final scores were tallied, Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken’s team, the Quizards of Oz, took home first place.
Teachers, Kyle Warren and Sarah Jones, organized the event. Warren said Hanna Elementary typically offers a community Thanksgiving dinner in November. Warren said school officials wanted to do something different than food this year. Warren said he and Jones had two weeks to plan and execute the trivia contest.
Warren and Jones said they were pleasantly surprised by the night’s turnout. Jones said she was hoping to get 10 teams for the event. Nearly twice as many teams signed up.
The 19 teams were quizzed on their knowledge of five different categories: Name that Number, One-Letter Answers, Athletic Aptitude, “Lit” Lit, and Carbon County Chronicles. Jones said school staff came up with most of the questions. When she needed additional trivia topics, Jones said she consulted the internet.
Jones said the answer most teams got incorrect during the Community Trivia Night was related to the 12 Days of Christmas. The question asked how many gifts a person would get if they received all the presents listed in the song. Jones said most people failed to consider the fact that you would receive the previous days’ gifts each subsequent day.
The correct answer is 364 gifts.
Sheriff Bakken’s team, made up of Sheriff’s Office staff, won the event. Jones said literature was the sheriff’s strongest category. The Hanna Elementary teacher said County Commissioner John Johnson’s son, Shae Johnson, and his team were a close second.
The first Hanna Elementary Community Trivia Night raised a little over $800 for the school. Warren said the money goes into the school’s activity fund to pay for future events.
Jones said the trivia contest is likely to become a permanent part of the Hanna Elementary School’s November schedule. Jones said school officials are considering holding another trivia contest this school year.
Warren and Jones said they want to make school a positive place for everyone.
