Wyoming’s Wyett Ekeler can put another notch in his belt.  The 5-11, 205 pound free safety from Windsor, Colorado was named Mountain West Defensive Player of the week for his performance Saturday night in the Cowboys win over Nevada.

Ekeler racked up five tackles, including 1.5 tackles for losses. He also came up with a big interception in the second quarter,  picking off quarterback Shane Illinworth on a third and 14 play, returning through traffic all the way for a touchdown. Here was the call on the Cowboy Sports Network.

Ekeler broke five tackles on the 38-yard sprint and leapt into the end zone for the score. It was a play so good, let’s hear it from a different angle. This was the call from the CBS television booth.

Eckler and the Cowboy defense recorded a season-high 12 tackles for loss Saturday night, and held the Wolf Pack to 201 yards of total offense and a season low 18 rushing yards.

Cowboy Head Football Coach Craig Bohl put the spotlight on Eckler’s ability to run with the ball when commenting on the play in the postgame interview.

This season, Ekeler has 75 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions. He also has six pass breakups and two forced fumbles.
