Carbon County commissioners officially support building a state shooting range in Natrona County.
In March of last year, the Wyoming state legislature passed a bill to create a state shooting range. Known as Senate File SF0169, the bill created a 12-member task force to select a location for the state shooting complex. After a location is chosen, $10 million of state, Game and Fish, and Department of Tourism funding will be used to construct the state-of-the-art shooting facility.
At the January 16th Rawlins city council meeting, shooting range advisory board member James Shearer said he would like the state shooting complex to be located in the city. However, Shearer acknowledged that Rawlins is unable to financially support the facility on its own.
Rawlins is now officially out of contention to host the state shooting complex.
Speaking at the February 20th Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Commission Chairwoman Sue Jones said Natrona County officials have asked her to sign a letter supporting their bid to have the facility constructed in their county.
Chairwoman Jones read the draft letter provided by the Natrona County commissioners. The letter said that Natrona County meets all the criteria set by the state shooting complex task force.
Continuing to read from the Natrona County commissioner’s letter of support, Chairwoman Jones said Natrona’s location within the state makes it the ideal place to build the large-scale shooting facility. The commission chairwoman said Carbon County pledges to help Natrona County in any way possible.
Chairwoman Jones said Carbon County does not have the infrastructure to support the state shooting complex. The commission chairwoman asked the board to allow her to sign the letter of support for Natron County.
Commissioner John Johnson said Natrona County’s centralized location makes it the ideal place to build the state shooting complex. For that reason, Commissioner Johnson said he will vote to allow Chairwoman Jones to sign the letter of support.
The board unanimously voted to allow Chairwoman Jones to sign the Natrona County commissioner’s letter of support for the state shooting complex.
