The Wyoming Cowboys lost Friday night’s Border War rivalry game to Colorado State 24-14.

The Cowboys looked disjointed and out-of-synch from the start in the 116th playing of the rivalry game as Wyoming surrendered the “Bronze Boot.”

Keith Kelly and Kevin McKinney had the call as the curtain came down on Wyoming’s first loss in the Border War rivalry since 2020. The Rams dominated on both sides of the ball. Gaining 248 yards on the ground CSU outrushed the Cowboys who put up only 117. CSU notched 196 passing yards to Wyoming’s 120.

CSU dominated the first quarter with two touchdowns. Wyoming got on the board early in the 2nd quarter with a John Hoyland field goal at the 12:18 marking it a 14-3 game. CSU would add a field goal before the end of the first half. The Cowboys would get into the end zone in the third quarter following a 62-yard gain on the ground by Jamari Ferrell.

A few plays later, the Cowboys scored their only touchdown of the game on a Kaden Anderson rush left to find the end zone.

In the first half of the game, the Cowboys were held to 81 total yards of total offense as the Rams went up 14-0.

Head coach Jay Sawvel said Wyoming would have had to play its best football of the season to beat the Rams and that did not happen.

The Bronze Boot will sit in Fort Collins until next year. The Cowboys return to action next week hosting Mountain West leader and College Football Playoff contender Boise State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
