The Wyoming Cowboys ran for 189 yards and improved to 2-0 with a 31-7 win over Northern Iowa at War Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The status of quarterback Kaden Anderson, who left the game late in the third quarter, remains in question for this week. Anderson left the game after taking a rough hit and fumbling the ball.

Until that point of the game, Anderson looked sharp, passing for 167 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He connected on 17-of-23 throws.

After Wyoming’s opening drive failed with a missed field goal, the Cowboys scored first with Sam Scott peeling off an 18-yard dash to the end zone at the 3:26 mark of the first quarter.

Keith Kelly had the call. Erik Sandvik’s kick was good to make the score 7-0.

The lead didn’t last long.

Harrison Bey-Buli ran for a two-yard touchdown run at the 7:25 mark of the second and Northern Iowa tied up the game at 7-apeice with the extra point conversion.

The Cowboys scored again at the 1:13 mark when Anderson connected with John Michael Gyllenborg to cap off an 8-play 45-yard drive.

The Cowboys got the ball back on a blocked punt and scored again with a field goal on the final play of the first half.

Wyoming continued to drive up the score in the second half. Anderson capped off a 10-play, 76-yard drive with a pass to Chris Durr for a score.

The score was 24-7 after the extra-point conversion. The Cowboys would score again to make it 31-7 at the 7:12 mark of the fourth quarter on an 18-yard Sam Harris run.

Despite the dominating, workman-like performance from the Cowboys, the mood among the 25,000-plus fans in the War had changed.

Anderson left the tent and was transported to the hospital in Laramie for closer observation.

Wyoming held Northern Iowa to only 170 yards of total offense, the fewest allowed since Northern Colorado was held to 147 in 2022. Another noteworthy state about the Wyoming defense: the Cowboys have allowed under 100 yards rushing in back-to-back games.

The Wyoming running game stands out on the stat sheet with three running backs rushing for 50-plus yards. Terron Killman put up a career-high 87. Sam Harris added 61 and Sam Scott put up 58-yards on the ground.

Tight-end John Michael Gyllenborg recorded five catches for 65 yards with a score. Chris Durr Jr. added four catches for 54 yards with a touchdown. Quarterback Kaden Anderson was forced out of the game with an injury after connecting on 17-of-23 passes for 167 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

Backup Landon Sims finished the game under center for the Pokes. Sims completed all three of his pass attempts for 23 yards. Wyoming ended the day with 190 yards through the air.

Wyoming Head Coach Jay Sawvel was pleased with the Cowboys’ performance. Sawvel responded to a question about the performance Sims put in after being thrown into the game following the injury to Anderson.

Sawvel noted that the first medical checks on Anderson came back as good but Wyoming’s starting quarterback will be sore after the third quarter hit to his blind side.

The University of Wyoming will provide an official update on Anderson’s status on Monday.

In the meantime, Head Coach Sawvell began work yesterday on this week’s game against University of Utah inside the war. The Cowboys and Utes will meet Saturday night, six o’clock kick off. Wyoming is 2-0 on the season.
