The Wyoming basketball team starts the year off 1-0 with a 99-75 win over Northern State at home in the Arena Auditorium.
The Cowboys shot 55 percent from the floor, 6 of 16 from three-point range and 17 of 28 from the free-throw line.
Northern State shot only 40 percent—27 of 67– from the floor and 12 of 40 from beyond the arc at 30 percent. The Wolves went 9 of 11 from the stripe.
The Cowboys had 62-24 advantage in the category of points in the paint.
The score was 50-to-40 at the half with Wyoming in the lead. The Cowboys outscored Northern State 49-35 in the second half to lock down the win.
For Cowboys Head Coach, Sundance Wicks, the game down came to a sense of urgency—which his team did not always have.
Wicks said he was disappointed in Wyoming’s lack of urgency.
Wyoming was led in scoring by Naz Meyer with 19 points along with six rebounds–the most by a freshman in an opener since Marcus Williams had 20 against Mississippi Valley State in the 2020-21 season opener.
The Cowboys had five players in double-figures with Khaden Bennett adding 14 points and seven rebounds. Adam Harakow added 12 points with Damarion Dennis adding 11 points and Matija Belic adding 10 points. Abou Magassa added a team-high eight rebounds along with seven points.
The Cowboys return to action on Saturday hosting Cal State Fullerton in a 2 p.m. start.
