If you think you’re having a tough year, Jay Sawvel had a worse one with a 4-6 record in his second year as the head football coach at the University of Wyoming.
The Cowboys finished in 9th place this year with four wins and losses. This year’s record was only slightly better than 2024. In Sawvel’s first year as head coach, the Cowboys finished with just three wins.
Sawvel was named the 33rd head coach at Wyoming, replacing Craig Bohl following his retirement.
Bohl finished his ten-year run as head coach with a 9-4 record, including a one-point win over Toledo from the Mid-America Conference in the Arizona Bowl. Bohl only had six wins during his first two years in Laramie, one less than Sawvel.
University of Wyoming Athletic Director Tom Burman talked last week about the challenges of being a first-time head coach and why Sawvel deserves another year at the helm.
Burman is in his 19th year as the Director of Athletics at the University of Wyoming. Since being named to the position in 2006, he has hired some accomplished head coaches across a slate of college sports.
Despite the troubles the football team has endured over the past two years, Burman is supportive of Sawvel moving into next season.
In the front office in the Athletics Department in Laramie and on Jonah Field, frustration built all season long. Burman said he expects Wyoming to emerge as a leader in the new Mountain West Conference next year.
